Neonatal Conference Rooms (D4-201 & 203)
The Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns Program (ACoRN) is designed to teach neonatal stabilization, support the multidisciplinary team, and identify and care for babies who become unwell or are at risk of becoming unwell in the first few hours or days after birth.
ACoRN uses a logical and systematic approach, as well as innovative learning tools and decision-making algorithms to:
- Gather and organize information
- Establish priorities
- Intervene appropriately
ACoRN introduces knowledge and skills sequentially, using a case-based approach. It is designed to be useful regardless of a condition’s complexity or how frequently a practitioner is called upon to manage specific conditions.
Program overview
ACoRN aims to teach the concepts and basic skills of neonatal stabilization and, where necessary, preparation for transport to a referral facility. It is designed to meet the needs of practitioners who may be faced with an at-risk or ill baby.
Like neonatal resuscitation, stabilization is most effective when performed by a well-coordinated interdisciplinary team.
ACoRN uses clinical scenarios to enrich learning and to reflect an interdisciplinary approach to clinical care, teaching and evaluation.
ACoRN reinforces principles viewed as essential for neonatal care:
- Family-centered care, including support for parents and caregivers.
- Team-based care, promoting an interdisciplinary approach to training and practice.
- Regionalized care, promoting liaison between referring and referral centres.
- Regionalized education, promoting an education-learner infrastructure based on existing outreach programs.
- Evidence-based care, firmly based on existing evidence and subject to ongoing peer-review and modification.
- Adult learning strategies, addressing the needs of practitioners using flexibility in delivery and content.
Pre-requisites / Essential pre-reading / Exam
The Acute Care of the at-Risk Newborn (ACoRN) workshop is a two-day workshop that consists of 2 parts:
Review of the 2nd Edition ACoRN Textbook AND ACoRN Essentials Guide AND successful completion of the CPS ACoRN online examination is required prior to attending the workshop.
Participation in the 2-day workshop including review of key concepts, participation in skills stations, simulations and debriefing exercise.
The online exam is available for purchase ($30 CDN) from the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) at http://pedagogy.cps.ca/#/online-courses/ac5286c9-94b4-4dad-9b08-38e6e957eea9
Prior to attending the workshop, participants must:
Complete the online exam prior to the workshop, and submit the ‘Online Examination Certificate’ to kendra.savage@mncyn.ca by Friday, May 3rd 2024.
Successful completion of all of the following is required to receive a CPS ACoRN Provider card:
- Online examination
- Integrated Skills Stations
- Simulation and Debriefing exercise
Required course materials
Registrants are required to review the ACoRN Essentials Guide and successfully complete the CPS ACoRN online examination prior to attending the workshop.
ACoRN providers, in addition to the requirements listed above, are also required to review 2nd Edition ACoRN Textbook.

- It is recommended that, at a minimum, you should have read the ACoRN Essentials Guide and reviewed the ACoRN textbook, 2nd edition.
- The laminated sequences are included with the ACoRN Essentials Guide. Please bring them with you to the Workshop!
